parades. (Celebrates the Oath of 1291, which is
considered the start of the Swiss Confederation.)
Italy in
August
Palio di
Siena - July 2nd and August 16, 2008. The famous horse race in Siena's central piazza is held
once in early July and once in August. The race consists of
bareback riders making three circuits of the main square and is over in 90
seconds, but it is preceded by five hours of flag-throwing acrobatics. For
the locals, it is the culmination of an entire year's plotting and scheming.

International Beer Festival - August 1-3, 2008. During
the 11th annual Berlin International Beer Festival, Karl-Marx-Allee will
again turn into the world's longest beer garden and bar. On a stretch of

brands of the world's finest beers .

Beethoven’s influence in the Bohemian and Moravian lands in 2004 and
having traced his relations to the cultural region of France in 2005,
we’ll turn our eyes to Russia this year: Rossija – the Russian name of the
country in Latin characters – is the motto of the Beethovenfest Bonn 2006.
Beetoven never went to Russia, but Russia came to him.

The European F1
Grand Prix, Valencia - 23 - 24 August 2008
Spain gets a second grand prix, and this is
going to be a corker! A fast street circuit around the swish harbourside of
Valencia, it could be the one to put Monaco in the shade.

VUELTA -
Granada to Madrid
August 30-September 21, 2008
The Spanish "Tour de France" begins on August 30th
and the mountain stages commence September 6th in the Pyreenes through Andorra
and head west toward Burgos over that week. Five more climbing days
begin on the 11th through the 15th with the last three stages, climb-time
trial and final in Madrid around September 19-21st.

Scotland in August
Edinburgh Military Tattoo

Scotland's stunning annual outdoor military spectacular set against the
magnificent backdrop of Edinburgh Castle. The Tattoo has been called the most
spectacular show in the world and is seen by an international TV audience of 100
million every year. But there's no substitute for being there, as part of the
217,000-strong audience over its three-week season on the Esplanade at Edinburgh
Castle.

One of the greatest celebrations of the arts, the Edinburgh International
Festival offers a unique opportunity to experience the excitement of live
performance by internationally renowned artists as well as the joy of

smaller venues around the city over a three-week period in late summer.

The world's biggest celebration of the arts takes over Edinburgh for three weeks
in August in a massive explosion of cultural and artistic expression. The
programme is a vibrant mix of art forms - theatre, comedy, music and musicals,
dance, events and exhibitions and children's shows, all attracting up-and-coming
talent and established names from around the world to take part in this most
famous of festivals.
T on the Fringe Festival
- August - Edinburgh
With over 120 artists playing throughout August in across Edinburgh, T on the
Fringe is THE contemporary music strand of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
Ayr Flower Show -
8th - 10th August 2008 - Ayr
Ayr Flower Show at Rozelle Estate attracts the cream of UK growers and a huge
range of gardening suppliers for an annual festival celebrating gardening and
outdoor living. With over 350 trade stands, hundreds of amateur competitive
classes and a full programme of family entertainment, the show attracts nearly
30,000 visitors every year.
Thirlestane Castle
Scottish Championship Horse Trials - 14th - 17th August 2008 - Lauder, Borders
Scotland's premier equestrian event features dressage, show jumping and cross
country over the three days. The programme features horse trials, carriage
driving, dog contests, children's entertainment and a shopping village.
Lanark Medieval Festival
- 16th & 17th August 2008
'Scotland's Living History Festival', attended by hundreds of re-enactors and
medieval traders from the north of Scotland to Cornwall and from Ireland. Over
two days, the town turns back the clock to the days of William Wallace with a
tented army where soldiers and camp followers explain and demonstrate how they
lived in the 13th century, with archery competitions, falconry displays,
jesters and jugglers, and medieval musicians and storytellers.
Mull of Kintyre Music
Festival - 21st - 24th August 2008 - Campbeltown, Argyll
Campbeltown in beautiful Kintyre is the setting for this weekend-long display
of new, emerging and established musical talent. Indoor and outdoor venues
host a range of concerts, sessions, ceilidhs, choirs, pipe and brass bands and
modern & Highland dancing. With open-air and children's events.
Speyfest - 31st July - 3rd
August 2008 - Fochabers, Moray
One of the north's foremost Celtic festivals, Speyfest offers a wonderful
weekend of high-quality traditional and modern music, concerts, late-night
ceilidhs and Celtic rock. Musicans from around the world will be performing as
usual, and there's a special programme for children and young people.

of Wales-
August 4 – 11, 2007
From singing, reciting, and dancing to food and football, this is the biggest
traveling folk festival in Europe. It all started in 1176.

Liverpool - World class museums, music and
culture including Beatles History - many great events throughout the year.

deserves the title of ‘Capital of Culture’. Competition is always fierce, as
every city bids to showcase its contribution to the world’s cultural landscape.
