The way to do Southern Italy is to stay at one or two places for three to five nights and do day trips. We revised our plans and stayed four nights in Pompeii, four in Sorrento (with one day on Capri), five in Naples and a week in Rome. It was not enough but a good start.
Instead of driving all the Amalfi Coast at once we took one day, while at Pompeii and went west for ½ day and then when in Sorrento we took a day and drove east to inspect at Positano and Amalfi. In addition to the several deluxe hotels we inspected four others that better suit most incomes. In Amalfi itself we did the same. The roads were not more harried than many in France and the views were spectacular. There was swimming in the sea this year as late as November 1st without wet suits. The biggest surprise, to Nancyhelen, was ROME and NAPLES. The streets were safe, in fact very safe and while she had no purse we could not but smile as all the Italian women, of all ages, carried very large handbags on shoulder straps!  Police are everywhere and so is the military in Naples and certain parts of Rome. Translations: Where the tourist are, so are the police! As we do for our French clients in Paris and Nice, we have now set up walking tours of Rome as well as how to spend 3, 4 or 6 days in Southern Italy.
