Description
Touring
Alsace and Champage during their fall harvests
is really a great way to see winemakers in action while enjoying a landscape
of a thousand colors. In winter the Christmas markets and shopping are
highlights of every weekend from November to the third week of December.
Alsace-Lorraine is a
fairy tale; half-timbered houses adorned with flowers, gabled roofs, and
chimneys topped with stork nests. The majestic forests and peaceful lakes of
the Upper Vosges are perfect for hiking or biking. The Wine Road winds its
way through 75 miles of storybook villages. YOUR
FRENCH CONNEXION owners have found exciting villages to
visit on the Rhine Road in Alsace. By boat, barge, car, and bike, travel
throughout the natural beauty of Alsace/Lorraine.
Strasbourg is Alsace's
capital, the heart of United Europe. Away from its modern buildings, canals
and pedestrian alleyways is the enchanting medieval section known as
"Petite France." Colmar is a lovely Renaissance town and
home to the extraordinary Unterlinden Museum, a restored 13th Century
nunnery. The Unterlinden's square courtyard is flanked by its former chapel
where the Isenheim Altarpiece now hangs. In Mulhouse, visitors find a museum
dedicated to the automobile. Five hundred classic cars, including many rare
models are housed here.
Just to the west of these cities lie petite villages
of wine makers eager to instruct you in their history and craft.
It is in Alsace-Lorriane that France and German
cultures have co-mingled after years of war. Language, culture,
architecture and cuisine blend, reflecting the peaceful growth of both the
economy and bonds of friendship. Two world famous restaurants reflect
this blending of cultures. Le Crocodile, Stasbourg and at Illhaeusern, The
Auburge de Ill. Both are excellent. We provide a fine selection of B and B's
in the countryside and good small to grand luxurious hotels in many areas as
well.
To many American families the memories
of the 442nd rescuing the Texas division makes this an area where
Japanese-American families come to remember their sons and relatives.
We can help you plan a visit to both
memories and friendly people, who have never forgotten our fallen heroes.
Cuisine
Celebrated regional dishes are choucroute,
made with fluffy sauerkraut, ham and sausage, and some of France's most
treasured pâté de foie gras come from Alsace's farms. The fresh
trout or partridge redefine the meaning of "the fare of the
country," and a tarte flambée, a pizza-like dish baked with
fresh cream, is considered vital to one's health and general well-being. The
pleasures of the table are often capped off by colorless potent fruit
brandies known collectively as l'eau de vie, the water of life.
Alsatian white wines,
dry and rich in bouquet, are sold under the name of the grape from which
they are made. Among the most famous, all entitled to "appellation
d'origine controlée" (meaning they must come from a specific area),
are Sylvaner, Pinot Blanc, Riesling, Pinot Noir, Muscat d'Alsace, Tokay,
Pinot Gris & Gewurztraminer.
