SPAIN - The South - Malaga and Cadiz

RONDA & THE MALAGA COAST - COSTA DEL SOL

Ronda, about an hours drive from the Costa del Sol and two hours from Seville, has become a major tourist destination over the past decade. The El Tajo Gorge carries the Guadalevin River right through the city where modern bull fighting originated and where we feature many lodging opportunities for most budgets.

Two of our favorite walks are down the cobbled streets to Plaza Duquesa de Parcent and along the Calle Armina to the San Francisco area with its fine tapas bars full of local people.

A few miles from Ronda there is a perfect Bed and Breakfast for the wheelchair user and/or large family.  This Villa makes this an ideal and economical stop both from the coast and to/from Portugal.

By car tour the White Villages of the Ronda area or hike the many trails that encircle the city.

While most of our clients want to avoid the non-Spanish tourist traps and mass tourist destinations we do have rentals and hotels for the golfer, sailor and beach bound who wish to experience the Costa del Sol including some Bed and Breakfast options as well as resorts from south of Ronda to Gibraltar.

THE PROVINCE OF CADIZ

Last year, we had four different families stay in this area at different types of housing. One group spent a week at a child friendly vacation resort, a second couple that loved to windsurf stayed at a bed and breakfast outside Jerez de la Frontera, the third group in a winery and the fourth group in an ancient monastery near the Jerez riding stables.

Jerez de la Frontera, is an important commercial center noted for its sherry and brandy. Its horses of mixed Spanish, Arab, and English blood are world famous.  Jerez was captured by the Moors in 711, and recovered by Alfonso X of Castile in 1264. Of interest are its Gothic churches and an 11th-century Arab alcazar (palace).

Cadiz province contains some of Andalucia's most windswept beaches, prettiest white villages and most celebrated sherry. It also boasts one of the region's best natural parks and within the park, the rainiest place in Spain: the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park.

Phoenicians, Greeks and Romans landed here and built its coastline, harbors and fishing ports. Today, the Cadiz coast is a Mecca for windsurfers, birdwatchers and anyone who prefers a wilder shoreline with relatively few beachgoers compared to the busier Costa del Sol.

CADIZ CITY

The historic center of Cadiz has an island feel about it's streets, lined with centuries-old seafront houses that have been weather beaten by ocean spray. Situated on a peninsula, this part of the city is almost completely enveloped by the sea; the town's beach is easily accessible and a mere pebble's throw from the center.
